Two young otter cubs waiting for mum to bring them a fish, and their other sibling is out of frame eating a butterfish. I love being out in the field, and when I am working, I like to be out early. This particular day had got down to the shore well before sunrise, and just as dawn was breaking, I had found the mum and three cubs., already out feeding. I had got myself in position and was following the family which were not moving far as the cubs were still young. Mum was out feeding bringing fish in for the cubs which were spending most of their time on the shore. The sun had just risen above the horizon, bathing the shoreline in lovely golden light. Lucky for me two of the cubs were exploring the shore and came upon to this rock into the glorious morning light. Sometimes we just need a bit of luck.⁠

I was on a remote Scottish island by myself with several hundred grey seals, and I unwittingly made a friend. While looking for good photographic positions to photograph the main colony without spooking them, I came into a small sandy gully that had a young grey seal in it. I sat down and photographed this seal for a little while before it spotted me. I was expecting it to go back into the sea, frightened when it came towards me and laid next to me, resting on my legs. At this point, I felt very nervous, in a remote location with a wild animal that can bite and is known for carrying lots of bacteria in its mouth that can give bad infections once bitten. I slowly inched away from it, not wanting to scare it. I was thinking it must have a thought I was a rock or part of the beach scene when it started following me. Fo the next three days every time it saw me it would come and want to sit next to me. It became a bit of a pain, I would just get myself in a good position, and it would come. I started leaving my camera bag with no cameras in it, just behind me and it would lay against that. Then after three days I never saw it again. I was wondering if it has been a rescued seal, I will never know, but on the one hand, it was lovely. Still, on the other, I always want to keep some distance between me and the wildlife, I want to have as little impact or change on their behaviour while photographing them as possible. ⁠

Wake up time, otters do a lot of sleeping but it is part of their strategy to conserve energy and keep warm.⁠
